Late 30's Velvet Dress with Embroidery

I know I put a lot of flapper dresses up, but I have to say the shape of this one is really awesome because you can really see the slinky but tight fit of the bodice as well as the fabric panels in the skirt that hang for dancing- very sexy and less boxy than most. I wonder who made all these dresses with their intricate beadwork.
I just realized I already posted this. Well, this time I have more to say about it.

Ancient Egyptian motifs became very popular after the discovery of King Tut's tomb; if you look at 20's and deco-era aesthetics you will see the themes often repeated.

30's Dress and Coat

This is truly amazing, from the absinthe color to the fur collar- such decadence! I think everyone hated velvet after the awful velours, crushed, and stretch velvets of the 90's, but real silk or rayon velvet is soft, light, and beautiful.

This dress is so 1930's skyscraper/futuristic- the metallic fabric, the square buttons, etc.

All I have to say about this outfit is that it is truly a work of art. The way stuff like this is made blows my mind!

Another Deco 30's Dress

I also am hesitant to buy dresses like this because, like much of my generation, I am conditioned not to wear long skirts or dresses (except, of course, for those super fun "princess" events such as prom or a your wedding which of course I personally give a shit about.) I also feel I am too short to wear long things- but then, you don't want to hem something like this because it ruins the long, lean, clingy look of the 30's. Anyway, the color and details are amazing in this one.

Oh so Deco 30's (I guess) Dress

Check out that marvelous collar! And though it's more humble, the flattering seaming around the bodice. One thing I think is really important to remember with clothing like this is that a woman probably made it by hand. It's astounding how complicated and well-made vintage clothes are; a dress like this is the work of a true artisan. Sometimes I wonder why I don't buy stuff like this when it's on eBay since it's so incredible, but then again, it's hard to justify a collection of things you will probably wear very rarely. That's why I need some money to start a real fashion museum!
